Why install a rooflight above a stairwell?

Positioning a rooflight above the stairwell lets light enter at the highest point of the property, then filter down through the stair void to reach landings, hallways, and potentially adjoining rooms along the way.

You can enjoy a property that feels more expansive and rely less on light fixtures. It also makes steps and handrails more visible so they’re safer to navigate, especially in properties with older residents or children.

Where to position stairwell rooflights

Where possible, placing stair rooflights above the main stair void allows light to travel directly through the open space between floors, illuminating the entire staircase for maximum light dispersion.

In other layouts, placing it closer to the upper landing may spread light better across both the staircase and the surrounding space, which works well for darker upper landings that feel intimidating.

You should also consider your roof orientation. South-facing rooflights can receive more direct sunlight throughout the day, while north-facing rooflights generally provide softer, more consistent natural light.

Framed rooflights provide a more defined edge around the glazing. Our rooflights for stairwells feature a thermally broken aluminium frame, helping to minimise heat transfer through the frame while creating a neat, finished appearance.

Both framed and frameless rooflights are available in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) and Jet Black (RAL 9005), with other RAL colours available on request.
