Toughened Glass

Toughened Safety Glass is up to five times stronger than non-toughened and because of its increased strength architects and builders worldwide can take architectural design much further, allowing a lot more natural light into their design whilst maintaining safety.

Tuffx toughened safety glass meets European Safety Standards and is situated in many different applications. Toughened safety glass is processed by subjecting panels of glass that are edge worked to a heating and cooling treatment whereby high compressive stresses are set up at the surfaces with balancing tensile stresses in the centre. The high compressive surface stresses that remain are what gives its increased strength.

Available in the following glass thicknesses;

  • 6mm toughened glass
  • 8mm toughened glass
  • 10mm toughened glass
  • 12mm toughened glass
  • 15mm toughened glass
  • 19mm toughened glass

Here at TuffX, we also offer a range of thickness in toughened laminated glass panels.

    Toughened Glass FAQs

Yes! At TuffX, we’re a UK supplier and manufacturer of high-quality toughened glass, toughened laminated glass, rooflights, and specialist-processed glass products for a wide range of applications, including balustrades, partitions, and walk-on floors.

We manufacture all of our products in-house, overseeing the entire design process to make sure our glass products meet high safety standards. This also gives the team more control over product quality, specifications, and lead times.

We supply toughened glass for both domestic and commercial projects, supporting tradespeople, architects, builders, developers, and homeowners with bespoke glass solutions.

Toughened glass is designed for applications where safety is paramount, which is why it’s so popular for many new builds.

It’s used wherever stronger, safer glazing is needed without compromising on light or design, providing unmatched longevity while improving the kerb appeal of homes and businesses. You’ll see it used mostly for the following:

It’s a dependable glazing option for projects that need safety glass with better strength than standard annealed glass, and it can be used to improve the amount of natural lighting that a property receives.

We supply a wide range of toughened glass, which includes toughened laminated glass, heat-soaked glass, heat-strengthened glass, screen-printed glass, and sandblasted glass.

Toughened laminated glass is made by sandwiching an interlayer between two pieces of toughened glass so that in the case of a breakage, the interlayer helps retain the glass in place, reducing the risk of loose pieces becoming displaced.

You’ll find this in a lot of public buildings where public safety is important. Our sandblasted and screen-printed glass is popular for businesses and offices that want to add logos or icons to doors or partitions, such as toilet signs or room labels.

Our toughened safety glass is available in a range of thicknesses, including 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, and 19mm.

One of the main benefits of toughened safety glass is unmatched strength.

TuffX toughened safety glass is up to five times stronger than non-toughened glass, making it suitable for projects where ordinary glass would not provide the same level of performance or safety, such as balustrades on high-rise buildings or walk-on glass floors.

Since the glass holds up better under stress, it also supports more ambitious design, as architects, builders and homeowners can use glazing to bring more natural light into buildings through modern extensions, commercial spaces, roof glazing, balustrades, and interior glass features.

Standard toughened glass should not be treated as walk-on glass unless it’s been specifically designed and specified for that purpose.

For example, we use triple heat-soak toughened laminated glass for our walk-on floors, as it’s structurally suitable for foot traffic and load requirements.

Our walk-on glass floors are tested and certified, with framed systems tested to PAS24–2016 C4.4.3 mechanical infill testing and BS6375-1 weather testing. They also have a uniformly distributed load (UDL) 4.0kn/m2.

Before the toughened process takes place, the glass needs to be manufactured to the correct size and specification.

That means details such as sizing, edge finishing, drilled holes, cut-outs, and radius corners should be confirmed before manufacture.

Our toughened glass panels are edge-worked before they go through the heating and cooling treatment. If you need to change the size or finish of your glass panels, please let us know during the enquiry stage so that we can create a product that’s ready for installation.

Yes! We sell glass balustrades for both commercial and domestic projects.

Our balustrades are a beautiful and safe way to improve natural lighting and enjoy uninterrupted views from balconies, patios, and terraces. They’re also a popular choice for stairways, making a property feel more bright and open to create the illusion of more space and less clutter.

All edges are polished as standard, and we can manufacture panels with drilled holes, cut-outs, radius corners, and shaping where required, so there’s less fuss when it comes to installation.
