The Project

Install: 5 bedroom House
Location:
Cheadle Hulme, Manchester
Contractor: James Day
Client: Homeowner

This project is a high-specification detached 5 bedroom, 380m2 residential redevelopment incorporating a large first-floor external roof terrace of 132 m², where the rooflights form an integral part of the finished architecture of the terrace surface.

The BRIEF

The design required several large-format, triple-laminated, double glazed walk-on rooflights capable of supporting pedestrian use while delivering excellent thermal performance and maximising natural daylight to the rooms below.

The large units measured approximately 3.0 m × 1.0 m, with additional large-format panels around 1.2 m × 2.2–2.4 m, together with a 1.2 m × 1.2 m rooflight serving a bedroom below. All units were specified as structural walk-on glazing to create a seamless deck-level finish, allowing the terrace to function as usable outdoor living space with garden furniture positioned directly over the glazed areas.

WHY TUFFX?

Following a review of the market, TuffX stood out as the preferred supplier for several reasons:

  • Excellent pre-sales technical advice.
  • Strong engineering knowledge for a complex structural glazing application.
  • Responsive and practical design support throughout the specification process.
  • Competitive quotation.
  • Outstanding customer service before and after the order.
  • Local manufacturing, providing the additional benefit of proximity to the project.

The project involved several challenging technical details during the design stage. Throughout this process, the TuffX technical team provided clear guidance and worked closely with us to develop practical installation solutions.

Design SOLUTION

Although the original structural glazing design allowed for larger individual spans, we chose to revise the layout during construction by dividing the largest glazed areas into smaller sections. This simplified installation, reduced installation costs and allowed one of the larger units to be allocated to the second dwelling within the development, while maintaining the overall design intent and performance.

The walk-on rooflights have now been installed successfully. As of August 26 construction of the roof terrace is continuing, with the finished decking to be laid flush around the glazing to create a continuous walkable surface.

Even at this stage of construction, the quality of the glazing, the amount of natural light introduced into the accommodation below and the overall appearance have confirmed that selecting TuffX was the right decision for the project.
