Meeting a client brief to incorporate a large framed Infinity rooflight into a West Midlands property, Rich, founder of RHJ Carpentry and Building Ltd and YouTube Channel Wood v Wood, partnered with TuffX to deliver a bespoke rooflight that combined high performance with practical installation benefits.

Working closely with the on-site team, we developed a large-scale solution that maximised natural daylight while meeting the structural, thermal and on-site installation requirements of the build.

THE BRIEF

The homeowner in the West Midlands who was making a series of adjustments to their bungalow, including adding a single-storey rear extension. The design centred on a spacious, open-plan kitchen and dining area, featuring a central island as the room’s focal point.

To maximise natural light over this key feature, the project team required a large framed rooflight capable of delivering both visual impact and high thermal performance, while being straightforward to install within a tight programme for external envelope completion before the winter weather set in.

A 1.5m x 2.5m rooflight was specified to flood the space with daylight. With winter approaching and the build schedule tight, the on-site team needed a solution that could be delivered quickly and installed efficiently, ensuring the extension became watertight without delay. Beyond speed, the system also needed to meet building regulations for thermal performance, structural integrity and weatherproofing, while providing a modern aesthetic to complement the contemporary interior design planned.

THE SOLUTION

The TuffX design team proposed the Infinity rooflight system, a factory-assembled, high-performance unit designed for rapid on-site installation and long-term durability. Manufactured at our 80,000 sq ft Knowsley facility, the rooflight was produced and delivered to align precisely with the project timeline, allowing the installation team to progress quickly to the glazing stage without delays.

Engineered to combine sleek aesthetics with strong thermal and structural performance, Infinity rooflights are available in both double- and triple-glazed formats. For this extension, thermal efficiency was a key consideration given the large glazed area; as such, the Infinity system’s insulated frame design helps minimise heat loss in winter while controlling solar heat gain in summer. Optional solar-control coatings can also be specified to provide additional protection.

The aluminium frame is powder-coated to the client’s specification, providing long-lasting durability and low maintenance, while ensuring the rooflight complements other external features. The glazing options also include enhanced acoustic performance, reducing external noise and improving the comfort of interior spaces.

The Infinity system’s design makes it installer-friendly. Delivered as a single, complete unit, the rooflight can be lifted, positioned and secured in place quickly, reducing on-site time and limiting the potential for errors.

For this project, installation began with the construction of a timber upstand with a minimum 5° pitch to ensure efficient water runoff. Final measurements were then confirmed when placing the order.

Once the rooflight was on-site and had been safely lifted onto the roof, a continuous bead of silicone was applied around the upstand to create a secure, weatherproof seal. Then, the powder-coated aluminium frame was lowered into place and fixed, completing the installation with minimal disruption. Infinity rooflights are designed for hassle-free installation, which enabled Rich and the team to create a watertight structure on schedule and for internal works to proceed as planned.

Performance

The completed rooflight created a striking architectural feature both externally and internally, while delivering practical daylighting benefits for the kitchen and dining area. Our double-glazed Infinity units also achieve centre pane U-values of 1.2 W/m²K, with the triple-glazed option reaching 0.7 W/m²K, offering up to 30% improved performance over standard double glazing. In addition, the system provides enhanced acoustic performance, reducing external noise and helping maintain a comfortable indoor environment year-round.
