TOUGHENED SAFETY GLASS for Padel Courts

Padel Court manufacturers are specifying toughened safety glass, as it provides the strength & stability for a great game whilst improving safety by retaining all broken pieces when a breakage occurs, reducing the risk of injury to players or passing pedestrians. TuffX negate this risk even further by heat-soak treating each panel, which highlights any defects and removes them from the production process.

Unlike traditional glass, toughened glass for padel panels is highly resistant to heat and can withstand heavy impacts. In the case of a fire, this adds an extra layer of safety, slightly slowing fire from spreading so residents have more time to exit the building.

Acoustics: It also provides excellent soundproofing, reducing noise transmission, making it ideal for indoor courts or courts in residential areas.

Easyclean Hydrophobic Coating: The glass has a special coating that is crystal clear, UV stable, chemically inter and extremely durable, having both hydrophobic and oleophobic capabilities. It will not peel or flake and is unaffected by extremes of temperatures from -20ºC to 350ºC. Protects against discolouration, corrosion and is water repellant, resulting in quicker and less frequent cleaning.

THE UK Padel Court MARKET

Padel is one of the fastest growing racket sports in the UK, by the end of 2025 the number of courts across the UK will exceed 1000 and it is still rapidly expanding. The game, played in doubles is a hybrid of tennis and squash. Easier to learn than tennis, in smaller courts with shorter rallies and less physically demanding than squash, it has truly broad appeal.

According to recent figures released by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), over 400,000 adults and juniors played Padel at least once in the 12 months leading up to December 2024, marking more than a threefold increase in UK Padel participation in just one year.

The court is enclosed by walls, which are an integral part of the game, as the ball is played off them. These walls are typically made from toughened or tempered glass, which provides the best and most predictable bounce, and is safe & durable.

According to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) 10mm or 12mm toughened glass is the preferred minimum specification for UK installations. TuffX supply only the thicker 12mm toughened safety glass.

Padel Court Kit Quality

At present, most of the Padel courts in the UK are built using kits, usually imported from Spain or China, which can take six to eight weeks to be shipped to the UK. However, there are known issues with the quality of these kits.

Vibration – Cheap kits often use thinner steel frames or lower grade anchoring systems. This means that when a ball hits the glass, the whole structure vibrates creating a noticeable shuddering noise. This makes the court appear low-grade, and also puts the glass being held by the frame under additional stress, making it more likely to break.
Corrosion – As Padel is incredibly popular in Spain, most court kits are designed for the Mediterranean climate. Subsequently, many don’t have the anti-corrosion coatings needed for the UK’s wet weather. Rust can start to appear within less than two years, causing metal expansion which changes the amount of pressure on the glass panels and can lead to it breaking.
Inferior Glass – Many of the manufacturers that make Padel court kits are known to use thinner glass panels and/or skip the heat-soak process to save on costs and increase profitability. Heat-soaking is the process of putting glass panels into a specialized oven after tempering and heating them to approximately 290°C for between two and four hours. This forces any impurities in the glass to expand, which breaks the glass so it cannot be used. Any glass which does not break during the process can be considered free of impurities and is therefore of a better quality.

What is toughened glass?

Tuffx toughened safety glass meets European Safety Standards and is used in many different applications. As padel court glass manufacturers, we use this type of glass and heat-soak treat each panel for extra strength and resilience against high forces.

Toughened safety glass is processed by subjecting edge-worked glass panels to a heating and cooling treatment, during which high compressive stresses are set up at the surfaces, with balancing tensile stresses in the centre.

The remaining high compressive surface stresses are what give it its increased strength. Toughened Safety Glass is up to five times stronger than non-toughened glass.

Because of its increased strength, architects and builders worldwide can take architectural design much further, allowing for much more natural light while maintaining safety.
